Creating An Impactful Ground Game to Reach Voters

Working hand-in-hand with Campaign 101’s Communications course, previewed last week, is the next one we’re highlighting: “Field.”

One of the few things that hasn’t changed in politics is the importance of running an effective ground game to win a campaign. But, engaging with voters directly—via doorknocking, texting, or phone calls—doesn’t come naturally to everyone. Especially first-time volunteers.

In this course, we’ve got everything you need to know from the logistical to the cultural side of things.

Brian Muldoon, an expert field and data strategist, begins the course by walking you through what turnout models are and how to determine the win number—or the total number of minimum votes you’ll need to win—and how to activate a strategy based on that. Here’s a clip, where he breaks it down even for those of us who aren’t that great at math.

Brian is joined by fellow seasoned experts in the ground game: Anthony Collins, a leader in mounting data-driven underdog challenges; Annika Jensen, who’s served on winning campaigns focused on bringing in more women and people of color into elected office; and Nominee’s own Katie Prisco-Buxbaum, a trusted confidante and senior adviser to multiple state and federal level campaigns; who each lend his or her expertise to round out this comprehensive course. You can expect to learn:

  • Tactics for running a winning canvassing operation, and templates for scripts

  • Text & phone banking strategies and supporting materials

  • Best practices for campaign operations and staffing, including sample org chart and onboarding materials

  • Fostering an inclusive culture among volunteers and how to retain them

  • How to use data to build an effective ground team

If you want your campaign to hit the ground running, these are the folks who will help you do it. Learn more about this course and the rest of Campaign 101 here.
